Underfunded HE College, Bangkok, Thailand

Thai students

The Switched On team's first classroom setup was deployed in Bangkok, Thailand in March 2006. Aims:

    • Improve existing system of seven sluggish computers at minimal cost, by adding up-to-date software functionality with high computing performance.
    • Add extra computer and laser printer.
  • Thailand Markus
    • Move to Open Source Software from out-dated commercial software, to minimise cost whilst avoiding using illegal copies of software.
    • Provide controlled access to the Internet, preventing access to unsuitable websites.
  • The top three aims were achieved during a visit by Richard in March '06 (central server, netorking equipment, and good quality laser printer), with equipment donated by Switched On. The system also has capacity for adding further terminals using second-hand PCs. Filtered internet access will be added 2007 by the Switched On team across the Internet from Europe.

The students particularly liked the ability to log on from any of the computers and have their own customised desktop and file area. Unfortunately, this particular project floundered somewhat after the initial set-up because the technical staff left. Lesson learnt! In India we are building in budget and local know-how for teaching and technical support. Furthermore, long-term we are aiming to make the centres financially self-sustaining, even providing their own teaching and technical expertise.
